    What is Tirzepitide and how does it work?

    Tirzepatide is a medication that is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. 

    Tirzepatide works by activating both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. This dual action is unique compared to other diabetes medications that typically target only the GLP-1 receptor.

    How does Tirzepatide differ from Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy)

    Tirzepatide
    – How it works: Dual Agonist that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.
    – Results: In studies, patients experienced a 15-22% reduction in body weight, exceeding what is typically seen with GLP-1 agonists alone.
    – Brand Names: Available as Mounjaro and Zepbound.

    Semaglutide
    – How it works: GLP-1 Agonist that only targets the GLP-1 receptor, without the added effects of GIP receptor activation.
    – Results:  Studies show patients losing an average of around 14.9% of their body weight in clinical trials.
    – Brand Names: Available as Ozempic and Wegovy.

    Is Tirzepatide FDA approved?

    YES – The FDA approved the brand name drug Mounjaro in May 2022 for glycemic control for type II diabetes.

    Zepbound was approved in November 2023 for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with one co-morbid condition.

    Potential Side Effects of Tirzepatide

    Reported side effects of Tirzepatide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve over time. Serious side effects are less common.
