    What is Ozempic and Why is Everyone Talking About it?

    Ozempic is the brand name drug (semaglutide), belonging to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It’s been studied for promoting weight loss.

    How Ozempic Works?

    Ozempic works by mimicking GLP-1, a natural hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. This hormone stimulates insulin secretion, reduces glucagon production, and slows gastric emptying. This leads to feeling full and reduces food intake and cravings and leads to accelerated weight loss.

    What is Ozempic Approved for

    Ozempic is approved to treat diabetes and lower A1C and cardiovascular risk. It has not been approved solely for weight loss but studies have shown that those using it do lose weight and it can be prescribed off label.

    Wegovy is the same drug product, also contains semaglutide, with slightly different doses than Ozempic. It was approved by the FDA for weight loss in 2021.

    Potential Side Effects from Ozempic

    Reported side effects of Ozempic include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve over time. You will discuss any pre-existing conditions and side effects with Dr. Michael Rankin during your initial weight loss consultation.
